5 Minute Chocolate Mug Cake

A single-serving cake takes 5 minutes to make!? In the MICROWAVE!?!?

Yes, it’s true. This cake takes a couple minutes to mix together in a mug (or bowl, if you prefer) and then gets microwaved for three minutes. It just has to cool down before you can dig in.

One small catch though: it isn’t that good. It was really spongey and tough..and a lot of people that have also tried making it agree. A few people love it though…and it is easy to make. I won’t be making this particular microwave cake recipe again though. I would honestly recommend you try and see if you can make it work, it only takes a few ingredients that are common.

5 Minute Chocolate Mug Cake
I’ve seen this recipe a lot of places, but I adapted it from Dizzy-Dee.

Makes 1 cake.

4 tablespoons all-purpose (or cake) flour
4 tablespoons sugar
2 tablespoons cocoa
1 Egg
3 tablespoons milk
3 tablespoons oil

Mix together the flour, sugar, and cocoa in a standard sized mug or a bowl.

Add in the egg and stir until incorporated, then pour in the milk and oil and mix well.

Put a paper towel down in the microwave and set the mug on top of it, microwave on high for 3 minutes.

The cake will rise above the top of the mug but mine settled back in, allow it to sit in the microwave for another 30-60 seconds after it is done (do not microwave it more, just let it sit).

Remove from microwave, use a fork to pull it out onto a plate. Top with some confectioners’ sugar and allow to cool before serving.

When my ex boyfriend was in the U.S. Marine Corps, and overseas for his birthday, this mug cake was an awesome thing for me to come across! He counted on my letters and packages to get him through that 3rd long combat deployment to Afghanistan. When he got the chocolate birthday cake, in a big “Happy Birthday!” mug, complete with a candle on top, he was over the moon. I know it doesn’t come out with the best texture, but, to those boys, getting homemade chocolate cake on their birthday, from their sweetie back home, is such a special thing that the last thing they’re going to notice is the texture. Lol. He was in heaven eating that cake.

when you say microwave do you mean it literally like the way you heat up food? because my microwave is a convection oven, so im not sure

  4. I’m a vegan so I used soy milk and egg replacement(ener-g)but i figured that that wouldn’t solve the tough and lack of flavor problem. So i added 1/2 teaspoon baking soda, 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract, and a 1/4 teaspoon coffee extract(or any other flavor you like) Mine overflowed a tiny bit but it was still a full mug of yummy moist chocolate cake in a mug! =P

Just made this with some self-raising flour which made it rather un-mud cake-like but it’s ok, I guess. Not too bad and with some choc buttercream, I can ignore it :D

Three minutes, wow! No wonder it comes out so tough. I’d definitely say cut about a minute off that time. Might also help to halve the ingredients — smaller cake, sure, but fewer calories (because wow, have you added it all up? kinda scary), and probably would cook through more quickly without getting so rubbery. Also, having tried this cake previously, I’ve had much better luck with mug brownies, not least because you don’t have to worry about adding an egg, or saving half an egg, or cooking it extra-long because of the egg, because there’s no egg. Here:

4 tablespoons all-purpose (or cake) flour
    4 tablespoons sugar
    2 tablespoons cocoa
    2 tablespoons water
    2 tablespoons oil
    Dash of baking powder
    Dash of vanilla
    Dash of salt

Mix together everything in a standard sized mug or a bowl.

Microwave on high for 90 seconds.

Remove from microwave, eat with a fork straight from the mug. Allow to cool somewhat before serving.

NOTE: To make a more calorie-friendly version, change all Tablespoon measurements to teaspoon, and microwave for 45 seconds instead.
