Nutella Kisses

People love Hershey’s Kisses. People love Nutella. I thought I’d combine the two ideas into Nutella Kisses.

These are great eaten on their own, or you could press them into cookies (like these peanut butter cookies).

I had to seriously improvise with making them. I don’t have any chocolate molds, let alone chocolate molds in the shape of cones or kisses, so I really had to strategize. I shaped some into small discs for a recipe I’ll be posting tomorrow, you could also shape pipe them into dots to use as chocolate chips if you still don’t want to make the whole kiss (or are lacking the tools). They are really simple to make though and worth the effort. Check it out.

I’ll be giving instructions on making the kisses using piping tips, if you have a chocolate mold you can use that and save yourself a bit of work.

Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silpat (or foil) if you are going to be making chips or discs, if you are just using the piping tips to make kisses, you don’t need to line the sheet.

Now, grab all your piping tips. I used my collection of small ones (looking back, I wish I used slightly bigger ones). Use small squares of aluminum foil to prop them up so they won’t tip over when filled.

Now you’ll want to get some Nutella and mix it with some butter (full recipe at the end of the post) and melt them together in a double boiler. Fill a piping bag and pipe them into the tips.

I piped some discs out as well, about the size of a quarter, using the leftover since I didn’t have enough piping tips for all the Nutella.

You’ll want to let this set in the freezer for at least two hours. When you take them out, they will be a bit softer than regular hershey kisses so I recommend leaving them in the freezer until ready to serve or use. My best recommendation is to use the kisses on top of cookies (like I mentioned earlier, these ones) or keep them in the freezer as a treat.

Nutella Kisses
Adapted from The Ivory Hut

1/2 cup + 2 tablespoons Nutella
1/4 cup (1/2 stick) unsalted butter
1/2 cup milk chocolate chips (optional)

In a double boiler, melt together all ingredients until smooth and glossy, about 3-5 minutes. It will get lumpy before getting smooth, just continue stirring and melting and it will come together.

I recommend adding the chocolate chips, even if you don’t add the full amount. Using only butter I noticed a much softer, easily melted kiss.

Once the mixture is melted, allow it to cool briefly. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silpat. Or use chocolate molds.

If you are using chocolate molds, simply pour the Nutella mixture into the molds and freeze for at least 2 hours.

If you do not have chocolate molds but still want the cone-shape of a “kiss”, you can use piping tips. Follow these instructions:

Gather together your piping tips, preferably ones that have a hole large enough to fit a toothpick. Grab some aluminum foil and separate it into 3″ squares, one for each tip. Make small mounds around each tip with foil to keep it propped up when placed on baking sheet.

Fill a piping bag (or ziploc bag with the end snipped off) with the Nutella mixture and pipe into the top of each piping tip til full.

If you don’t have enough (or any) piping tips, simply make small discs on the mat to have wafer-like discs.

Place baking sheet in the freezer for at least two hours. When you want to release the Nutella Kisses from the piping tips, insert a toothpick into the small end, pushing the kiss out of the mold. If it sticks, rub the tip in between your hands for a second or two (your body heat will melt the Nutella Kiss a little bit, making it easier to release). Place back in the freezer until ready to use.
