Gross Airport Chocolate Cake (San Francisco)

I saw some cake in the airport in San Francisco and thought it’d be interesting to try.

It tasted like stale box mix cake with icing that was left on a shelf unsealed and then they pressed some chocolate onto the side.

Just because it looks good doesn’t mean it tastes good.

Cupcakes in Chicago (Chicago)

I’m in Chicago until Friday (then I leave for San Francisco) and was super excited to grab some delicious cupcakes. I’ve had a few bakeries recommended to me and I tried out a bunch so far.

Chicago

I wanted to get a picture for this post that really summed up the essence of Chicago…so I took a (bad) picture of this wall that said “Chicago” on it.

Tim Hortons (Canada)

Tim Horton’s is one of my favorite things about Canada. There are a couple in the states but not by me. They are kind of like Dunkin’ Donuts (coffee and doughnuts) but they offer a bit more and it tastes much better.

I went in for breakfast and I was going to get a vanilla doughnut but I saw this chocolate danish, something I had never seen before (maybe I’ve been living under a rock and they’re everywhere, but it was new to me). I had to get it. It was super chocolatey with flakey crust, kind of dry but it was about $1.50, no complaints here.

Right now I’m off to Chicago for four days, they just opened up a Sprinkles location there a couple weeks ago and I have been dying to try it, I will make sure to make a big post devoted to them! I have five or six flavors on my list to try.

Shady Maple Whoopie Pies (Philadelphia)

**NOTE: I’m on vacation from August 5th to the 16th to Toronto, Chicago, and San Francisco. I will still try to put up some recipes but I might not be able to bake while I’m gone. I’ll be making posts about the different bakeries I visit though!**

A couple friends and I went out to East Earl, PA to a place called Shady Maple. It is a big buffet, a farm market, and has a banquet hall. We drove through suburban Pennsylvania and through the countryside. It’s out by Lancaster.

It was $20 to get in the buffet and barely anything was vegetarian so I decided to just skip eating and go in free. However, they had a little stand with baked goods and I have heard good things about their whoopie pies.

They are a good price and are pretty big. They are super soft and moist with a creamy center. They have a perfect frosting to pie ratio. I picked up a couple more to bring back to the city.

A Trip to Boston & Sweet (Cupcakes!)

Yesterday my roommate and I took a day trip up to Boston. Megabus offers really cheap tickets to a bunch of places like New York, Toronto, Boston, Washington DC, and a bunch more. We booked our tickets almost 2 month ago so they were $2 round trip each.

A few people recommended Sweet to me, a cupcake shop with a few locations around Boston. I went to the one in Harvard Square and later the one on Mass Ave (they were THAT good).

They have a ton of flavors and offer normal sized and mini cupcakes. $3.25 for a normal size and $1.95 for a mini. A little on the pricey side but these were actually worth the price (compared to SOME cupcake shops I’ve been to). It was also a beautiful shop, very clean, and the staff in both of the ones I went to were really nice. They also offer frosting shots, a small cup filled with delicious frosting.
